The relationship between the first two rows is the central engineering tension in tyre design. Compounds that reduce rolling resistance tend to reduce wet grip, and the declared values make that trade-off visible to a buyer for the first time.

Tyres already have per-unit identity

Every tyre carries a permanent moulded marking identifying the manufacturing plant, the tyre size and specification, and the week and year of production. It is unusual for a consumer product to arrive with this by default.

What the marking does not do is resolve to anything. It identifies a production batch to somebody who knows how to read it, which is a much weaker capability than an identifier that a scanner can turn into a record.

Retreadability is the attribute that matters most

Retreading replaces the worn tread on a sound casing, and for truck and bus tyres it is a mature industry that extends a casing’s life across several cycles.

Whether a casing is retreadable depends on its construction, its service history and its condition, and the second of those is exactly what nobody records. A casing that has been run underinflated, overloaded or repaired incorrectly may be unusable in ways that inspection does not reliably reveal.

Tyre collection is well established across the EU, and what happens after collection varies enormously depending on what the tyre is made of and what markets exist locally.

The route depends on casing condition and material composition.

The distinction between the last two matters for any circularity claim. Energy recovery is a legitimate treatment route and it is not material recovery, and describing it as recycling is exactly the kind of claim Directive (EU) 2024/825 constrains.

What a tyre passport adds

The useful design connects what already exists rather than replacing it, since the marking, the label and the collection system all work.

A resolvable identifier tied to the existing marking, carrying declared label performance, material composition, retread history and casing service data, turns three disconnected systems into one record. Fleet operators get residual value, retreaders get grading data, recyclers get composition, and regulators get a verifiable chain.

Where the sector should start

Make the existing marking resolvable before adding new data. It is already permanent, already universal and already survives the product’s entire life, which are properties that would take years to establish from scratch.

Then attach service history for commercial fleets first, since those are the tyres where retreading economics are strongest, telematics already capture pressure and load data, and a small number of operators control a large share of casings. Consumer tyres can follow once the model is proven where the value is highest.

This sequencing matters because tyre volumes are enormous and the temptation is to solve for the whole market at once. A fleet-first approach reaches a working record with a handful of commercial relationships rather than several thousand retail ones, and it does so on the tyres where the recovered value actually justifies the effort.
