What does a furniture Digital Product Passport contain?
A furniture passport carries timber origin with plot-level geolocation for EUDR due diligence, board and adhesive composition, durability and load ratings, disassembly instructions with fastener types, spare part availability, and end-of-life routes for refurbishment or board recycling. It serves both the deforestation and ecodesign obligations from one record.
The EU Deforestation Regulation is already in force, while the ESPR reaches furniture through a delegated act still to be adopted. Collecting once for both is the difference between one programme and two.

Map the timber chain
Identify which suppliers can actually reach the harvest plot. In most furniture chains that is the sawmill, not your direct supplier.

Collect geolocation at source
Sawmills and concessions submit coordinates against consignments and sign them, so the evidence carries its own provenance.

Consignments link to the batches and models built from them, which is what lets a due diligence statement point at a product.

Frequently asked questions
What does the EUDR require for timber furniture?
Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 requires operators placing relevant commodities on the EU market to show the wood was not sourced from land deforested after 31 December 2020, and to hold geolocation coordinates for the plots of land where it was harvested. A due diligence statement must be submitted before the product is placed on the market.
How precise does the geolocation have to be?
Plot-level. For plots above four hectares the regulation expects polygons rather than a single point. In practice this is the hardest data in a furniture supply chain to obtain, because it sits several tiers upstream with sawmills and forest concessions rather than with the furniture manufacturer.
How does a passport help with disassembly and reuse?
Furniture is usually landfilled because nobody knows how to take it apart or what the panels are made of. A passport carries the disassembly sequence, fastener types, board composition and adhesive types, which is what a refurbisher or a board recycler needs before they will accept the item at end of life.
Do we need a passport per item or per model?
Model level covers most durability and composition data. Batch level is normally required for EUDR, because the due diligence statement attaches to a consignment with a specific harvest origin. Item level is worth it for contract furniture, where individual assets are tracked, refurbished and resold over decades.
What about contract and office furniture?
That is where the return arrives fastest. Contract buyers already ask for material composition, recycled content and end-of-life routes in tenders, and increasingly for evidence rather than assertions. A passport answers a tender question with a signed credential instead of a marketing sheet.
